Dick's Sporting Goods first began with a man named Richard "Dick" Stack. Dick, as he was most known as, was working at an Army Surplus store when he was only 18 years old. The owner of the store came up to Dick, who was a frequent fisher, and asked him if he would come up with a list of objects that the average person might need to get involved in the bait and tackle buisness. After Dick presented his ideas to the owner he was called dumb and told that he had no idea what he was doing. Dick was dissapointed when he heard this. He went over to his grandmother's house where he spent the majority of his time and told her what had happened earlier on. His grandmother then asked him how much it would cost for him to start his own buisness with that he replied $300. His grandmother walked into her kitchen, opened her cookie jar which contained her life savings and handed Dick $300 dollars and told him to start his buisness himself. By 1958 he had expanded his sporting goods line into what we see in stores. Ed Stack, Dick's son, is the current CEO and chairman of Dick's Sporting Goods. He and his sibling bought the store from their father and are responsible for taking just two stores and expanding it into over 500 stores. Today Dick's family continues to offer the finest products at competetive prices backed by the best service anywhere.
